Biking in the Scottish Borders

Whether you are a newcomer to cycling, or a committed mountain bike enthusiast, there is something for everyone on our doorstep.

For the on-road cyclist there are hundreds of miles of quiet back roads around us, where you can meander along country lanes and stop off at a village teashop for that well deserved break. The local forests also offer many miles of waymarked cycle tracks on gently graded forest paths.

If you wish to cycle a little further, routes such as the 4 Abbeys Cycle Route will give you a 55 mile circular tour taking in the abbeys at Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh, following a scenic route with many points of historic interest along the way.

Another 37 mile circular loop starting and finishing in Stow will take you through some of our loveliest scenery on quiet country roads. There are two fairly steep hills on the route, but the downhill runs make the effort well worth while, and the roads are virtually traffic free. You need to carry your own supplies on this one as there are few teashops or hotels, but there are plenty of scenic places for a picnic lunch along the side of the river.

We have a good selection of maps and ideas for cycle touring in the area, and are happy to suggest routes for a leisurely or more challenging day out.
